Hail and strong wind storms occur more often than you would think.
Every square inch of Illinois has been hit by a severe storm in the past 20 years over 100 different times. One of the most recent storms was on April 6th 2010 which most of you might remember. This storm produced baseball size hail that devastated the cities surrounding Des Plains, IL. The catastrophe was so large that insurance companies are still paying for the damage today.
CAN HAIL DAMAGE MY ROOF?
Hail damage to asphalt shingles can cause soft spots, divots and bruising that may or may not be visible to your everyday roofer or homeowner. Hail impacts will loosen the granules that make up the top surface of the shingle that protects it from UV rays. If asphalt is exposed to UV rays it will dry out causing thermal cracking. Thermal cracking causes the shingles to not live its expected life time.In some cases hail can be so large it will break through the shingle’s matting. These hail impacts may lead to roof leaks causing interior water damage and mold infestation.
CAN HAIL DAMAGE MY SIDING, GUTTERS AND DOWNSPOUTS?
Aluminum siding will show its damage by denting. Even small "pea sized” hail will cause significant cosmetic damage to aluminum and other soft metals like gutters, downspouts and fascia.Which may seem minor, but was it that way before the storm? Would you mind a few door dings on your car? Your insurance companies feel that this type of damage, though it is cosmetic and minor is a covered loss.
